Every year, Africa's schools produce students with extraordinary scientific potential. Most never enter a research laboratory, meet a scientist who looks like them, or learn that a career in quantum physics or materials science is within reach. This isn't a talent deficit—it's an infrastructure deficit.

Traditional talent identification in Africa relies heavily on national science competitions and examination scores. These tools identify some talent, but they systematically miss students in under-resourced schools, girls facing cultural barriers, and curious minds whose potential doesn't conform to standardized metrics.

STEMNova's Young Scholars STEM Discovery programme takes a different approach: multi-dimensional assessment combining performance, curiosity indicators, and teacher nominations; sustained mentorship rather than one-off prizes; and explicit equity weighting in selection criteria.

The result, in illustrative data from our first two years, is a talent pipeline that looks like Africa—geographically diverse, gender-balanced, and drawn from public institutions as often as elite schools. That's what building Africa's scientific future requires.
